affogato coffee

Affogato coffee turns two simple ingredients into the kind of dessert that makes me look suspiciously organized. I scoop creamy vanilla ice cream into a glass, pour hot espresso over it, and watch everything melt together. My husband calls it dessert; my picky kid calls it magic. Honestly, I agree.

Affogato Coffee

This Affogato Coffee combines creamy vanilla ice cream with hot espresso for an easy dessert that balances rich coffee flavor with cool sweetness. The espresso melts the ice cream into a silky, frothy treat that tastes elegant while requiring almost no effort.

Equipment

  • espresso machine
  • Ice Cream Scoop
  • Measuring cup
  • serving glasses
  • Small Spoon
  • Freezer

Ingredients

Affogato Base

  • Vanilla ice cream — 2 cups (300 g), very cold
  • Fresh espresso — 4 shots (120 ml), freshly brewed
  • Vanilla extract — 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml), optional

Optional Toppings

  • Dark chocolate, finely grated — 1 tablespoon (5 g), optional
  • Chopped toasted hazelnuts — 2 tablespoons (15 g), optional
  • Ground cinnamon — 1 pinch (0.1 g), optional
  • Caramel sauce — 2 tablespoons (30 ml), optional

Instructions

  • Place two serving glasses or small dessert cups in the freezer for 5 minutes. Chilled glasses help the ice cream stay firm during assembly.
  • Scoop 1 cup of very cold vanilla ice cream into each chilled glass. Keep the scoops compact so they hold their shape when the espresso arrives.
  • Brew four fresh espresso shots. Use hot, freshly prepared espresso for the strongest aroma and the best contrast against the cold ice cream.
  • Stir vanilla extract into the espresso if using. Taste carefully before adding sweetener because the ice cream already provides plenty of sweetness.
  • Pour two espresso shots slowly over each ice cream portion. Let the hot coffee melt the edges naturally and create a creamy, frothy texture.
  • Add grated chocolate, toasted hazelnuts, cinnamon, or caramel sauce if desired. Keep toppings light so they complement rather than overpower the coffee.
  • Serve immediately with a small spoon. Enjoy the contrast between the firm ice cream, melting center, and warm espresso before everything fully combines.
  • For a firmer texture, use ice cream directly from the freezer and pour espresso around the scoop instead of directly over its center.

Notes

Use high-quality vanilla ice cream and freshly brewed espresso for the best flavor. Serve immediately because affogato naturally melts as the hot coffee meets the cold ice cream. For a firmer dessert, chill the serving glasses and keep the ice cream deeply frozen until assembly. For a softer, creamier texture, let the espresso flow directly over the scoop. Customize with dark chocolate, caramel, toasted hazelnuts, almonds, cinnamon, cocoa, orange zest, or a small pinch of sea salt. Do not freeze an assembled affogato because the melted ice cream and coffee can form icy crystals. Store unopened ice cream and toppings separately according to their package directions.
