affogato dessert

Affogato dessert makes me feel fancy without requiring fancy skills. I scoop cold vanilla ice cream into little glasses, pour hot espresso over everything, and call it done. My husband sees dessert, my picky kid sees ice cream, and I see five peaceful minutes. Honestly, everyone wins, including my dishwasher.

Affogato Dessert

This Affogato Dessert combines creamy vanilla ice cream with hot espresso for a simple Italian-inspired treat. The warm coffee melts the cold ice cream into a silky, creamy dessert with bold flavor and satisfying temperature contrast.

Equipment

  • espresso machine
  • Ice Cream Scoop
  • Measuring cup
  • serving glasses
  • Small Spoon
  • Freezer

Ingredients

Ice Cream Base

  • Vanilla ice cream — 2 cups (300 g), very cold
  • Fresh espresso — 4 shots (120 ml), freshly brewed
  • Vanilla extract — 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml), optional

Optional Toppings

  • Dark chocolate, finely grated — 1 tablespoon (5 g), optional
  • Chopped toasted hazelnuts — 2 tablespoons (15 g), optional
  • Caramel sauce — 2 tablespoons (30 ml), optional
  • Ground cinnamon — 1 pinch (0.1 g), optional

Instructions

  • Place two serving glasses in the freezer for 5 minutes. Chilled glasses help the ice cream stay firm during assembly.
  • Scoop 1 cup of very cold vanilla ice cream into each chilled glass. Keep the scoops compact so they hold their shape.
  • Brew four fresh espresso shots. Use hot, freshly prepared espresso for the strongest aroma and the best contrast against the cold ice cream.
  • Stir vanilla extract into the espresso if using. Avoid adding extra sugar unless you prefer a sweeter dessert.
  • Pour two espresso shots slowly over each ice cream scoop. Let the hot coffee melt the edges and create a creamy, frothy texture.
  • Add grated chocolate, toasted hazelnuts, caramel, or cinnamon if desired. Keep toppings light so they complement the coffee and ice cream.
  • Serve immediately with a small spoon. Enjoy while the ice cream remains partly firm and the espresso stays warm.
  • For a firmer texture, pour espresso around the scoop instead of directly over its center. For a creamier result, pour directly over the ice cream.

Notes

Use high-quality vanilla ice cream and freshly brewed espresso for the best flavor. Chill the glasses and keep the ice cream frozen until assembly for a firmer texture. Pour coffee directly over the scoop for faster melting and a silkier result, or around the sides for more structure. Customize with dark chocolate, caramel, toasted hazelnuts, almonds, cocoa, cinnamon, orange zest, or flaky sea salt. Serve immediately because affogato naturally melts as the hot espresso meets the cold ice cream. Do not freeze the assembled dessert because the melted coffee and ice cream can form icy crystals and lose their smooth texture. Store toppings separately according to their package directions.
